Wall Plastering in Lancing

Skim coating is the process of applying a thin layer of finishing plaster over existing plasterboard or a previously plastered surface to create a smooth, even finish. It is the most common plastering job we carry out, and it is needed after plasterboard installation, after stripping wallpaper, or when existing plaster is rough, uneven, or has been poorly repaired. A two-coat skim, properly applied and trowelled up, gives a glass-smooth surface that paints beautifully.

When plaster has blown, been damaged beyond repair, or needs removing entirely, we strip back to the brick or block, apply bonding coat to even out the surface, and finish with a skim coat. In older properties around Lancing, particularly Victorian and Edwardian terraces, the original lime plaster may have degraded over time. We assess whether modern gypsum plaster is suitable or whether a lime-based approach is better for the building.

For badly damaged walls or uneven blockwork, we fit new plasterboard using dot-and-dab adhesive or a timber batten framework, then skim the boards flat. This is often quicker and cheaper than trying to replaster a very uneven surface directly, and it provides a consistently flat result.

Not every job needs a full re-plaster. Cracks, dents, holes from removed fixtures, and patches where cables or pipes have been chased in can all be repaired locally. We cut out the damaged area, apply new plaster, and feather it into the surrounding surface so the repair is invisible once painted.

Stripping wallpaper often reveals a mess underneath: torn paper backing stuck to the plaster, gouges from scrapers, uneven filler from previous decoration, and sometimes damp patches. In many cases, the walls are not in a condition to accept new paint or paper without being skimmed first. We prepare the surface, seal it, and apply a fresh skim coat so you have a smooth, even base for whatever finish you choose.
