The subframe is the critical element: we use 6x2 or 8x2 joists at 400mm centres (or closer for heavier loads), supported on concrete pads or adjustable pedestals, with proper ventilation underneath to prevent rot. Deck boards are screwed down with stainless steel screws and spaced consistently for drainage.
Composite Decking
Composite decking boards are made from a mix of wood fibre and plastic. They cost more upfront than timber but require virtually no maintenance: no annual oiling, no sanding, and they do not splinter. We install composite decking from manufacturers like Trex, Millboard, and similar brands. The subframe is still timber, built to the same standards as a softwood deck.
Steps and Balustrades
If the deck is raised, steps and balustrades are needed for safety and building regulation compliance. We build steps with proper risers and non-slip nosings, and fit timber or metal balustrades with handrails. For raised decks over 600mm, building regulations apply, and we build to meet them.
