Gate Installation and Repair in Lancing

We install timber side gates, garden gates, and pedestrian driveway gates. The gate is only as good as the posts it hangs on, so we set new posts in concrete where needed, ensuring they are plumb and spaced correctly for the gate to swing freely. We fit heavy-duty hinges rated for the gate weight, latches, bolts, and locks, and adjust the gate to clear the ground without dragging.

Common gate problems include sagging (usually caused by loose or rotted posts), sticking (the gate has swollen or the ground has shifted), broken hinges, failed latches, and rotten timber at the base. We diagnose the issue and fix it. If the gate is beyond repair, we replace it and reuse the posts if they are still sound.

Side gates are primarily about security, keeping the passage between the front and back of a property closed off. We fit tall side gates with key-operated locks, bolts, and self-closing hinges. For rental properties and houses with side access, this is one of the simplest security upgrades you can make.

For wider openings, we install double timber gates with drop bolts, pad bolts, and ring latches. If you need automated gates, we can install the gate itself and coordinate with an automation specialist for the motor and controls.

The post is the most important part of any gate installation. A gate post that is not deep enough, not properly concreted, or set in soft ground will lean within months, causing the gate to drag and jam. We set gate posts a minimum of 450mm deep in postcrete or concrete, and use larger-section timber or concrete posts for heavier gates. If you have existing posts that are leaning, we can reset them or replace them entirely.

We fit heavy-duty galvanised hinges rated for the gate weight, ring latches, thumb latches, tower bolts, pad bolts, and key-operated locks depending on the gate's purpose. All hardware is selected for outdoor use and resistance to the coastal weather along the Sussex coast. We also treat new timber gates with preservative before hanging and can paint or stain them to match existing fencing.
