Shower enclosures need to be fully waterproof behind the tiles, not just on the surface. We apply tanking membrane or liquid waterproofing to all shower walls and floors before tiling. This prevents water from seeping through grout joints and adhesive into the substrate behind, which is the primary cause of damp, mould, and tile failure in bathrooms. Bathroom floors need slip-resistant tiles, waterproof adhesive, and properly formed falls toward the drain in wet rooms. If existing tiles need removing first, we strip them, assess the condition of the wall or floor behind them, and repair or replace the substrate before re-tiling. Old plasterboard behind tiles in wet areas often needs replacing with moisture-resistant board.

The grouting is just as important as the tiling itself. In wet areas, we use waterproof, flexible grout that resists cracking and mould growth. Silicone sealant at junctions between tiles and sanitary ware provides a flexible, waterproof seal that accommodates movement, and we use mould-resistant silicone in every bathroom. If your existing grout has gone black with mould or your silicone has pulled away, we can re-grout and re-seal without a full re-tile.
